I Quit
Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops. A quarrelsome person starts fights as easily as hot embers light charcoal or fire lights wood. Rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one’s heart. Proverbs 26:20-22
There is a business in every city, town, and village: large, small, or somewhere in between that stays incredibly busy even when unemployment is at its highest and in the slump of a recession. This industry doesn't create a someth...ing to sell or offer a productive service, it is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, twelve months a year. Its dedicated employees are committed to keeping the doors open through rain, sleet, or snow. The heat of the summer or the frigid air of the winter never hinders their determination to keep the lights on and the doors open. Those who are employed never take a vacation and sick days are unheard of. This venture is always looking for willing individuals with very specific qualifications but there is no need for a diploma or degree; there is no need for a specific skill. The only requirement for those interested in its opportunities is the possession of one large mouth and two big ears. The business name? The Rumor Mill.
If there is something to be twisted...those who work in this place of employment are just the ones to get it done. If there is a nice embellishment that needs an incredible sheen...those who clock in are the ones who will make sure the glow is impeccable. If there is a sordid story to be told...those who keep the mill cranking will be just the ones to get the presses moving at top speed. If there is a shaded truth that needs some wheels, those who give their days to perfecting forward momentum will be happy to serve. If there is a character to crush, the ones who swing the hammer will be much obliged. If there is a truth that needs its legs cut off at the knees, those that are proficient in the use of a machete will produce a perfectly formed half truth. If there is a lie that needs to be published, those who are skilled in the art of deception will make sure it is headline news.
What, you may ask, is the pay scale for those who choose to be employed at this highly successful place of business? According to the law of sowing and reaping, those who choose this line of work will be paid rich dividends of heartache and pain. They will be given the opportunity to enjoy all of the antacids they can absorb. They will be given all of the sleepless nights, dreary days, and lonely hours they can possibly imagine. The greatest benefit offered them for their faithful employment is a broken, battered, and bruised life, given them by the repercussions of an unbridled, untrained, and untamed tongue. There isn't but one hope of happier days and a more promising future. Throw the keys on the desk, walk out the door, and say with intense fervor, I QUIT!
